What is Drilling? Why Is It Done? How to Open a Borehole?

Drilling is a technical practice generally performed to explore or use underground resources. Drilling is often used to reach underground layers at a certain depth and is important for the discovery or extraction of resources such as liquid, gas, minerals or water. It is used in various industrial and scientific fields such as drilling, exploration, mining, access to water resources, geothermal energy production and oil/gas exploration.

Drilling is usually accomplished using a drilling rig or drill equipment. The steps of a basic drilling operation may include:

  1. Preparation: It starts with determining the drilling area and obtaining the necessary permits. Next, drilling equipment and personnel are prepared.
  2. Drill Setup: Drill equipment is brought to the drilling point and set up. The drilling rig or drill machine is positioned so that drilling is done in depth and direction.
  3. Drilling Process: The drill bit is advanced underground, starting from the surface. During drilling, the drill bit rotates, creating the hole that goes into the ground. Liquid (usually water or mud) is pumped around the drill bit, cooling the drill and carrying away the rock fragments removed during drilling.
  4. Well Drilling: When a certain depth is reached in drilling, the well is dug. At this stage, the well can be supported or completed in various ways, for example, by pouring concrete or lining the walls with pipes.
  5. Testing and Evaluation: Once the borehole is completed, samples can be taken from the well or pressure and flow measurements can be made to test the flow of resources through the well. These tests are important to evaluate the potential of the well.

The process of drilling a borehole can be quite complex in terms of technique and cost. Factors such as choosing the right equipment, drilling to the correct depth, and complying with local regulations must be considered.
