What is a Lightning Rod? Types and Principle of Operation

A lightning rod is a device used to prevent or minimize damage caused by lightning in the atmosphere. These devices are used especially in high-rise structures, antennas, power transmission lines and other similar structures and facilities. Lightning rods collect lightning energy and protect structures and equipment around them by grounding them in a controlled way.

The basic working principle of lightning arresters is to ground the energy by neutralizing the electric field at the moment when lightning occurs. This has led to the use of different types of lightning rods depending on the structure or device. Here are some types of lightning rods:

Franklin Type Lightning Arrester (Traditional Lightning Arrester): This type of lightning arrester is widely used in high-rise structures and towers. It consists of a pole with a metal tip, and when lightning attracts this tip, it directs energy to the grounding system.

Cage Lightning Arrester (Faraday Cage): This type of lightning arrester, usually installed on building roofs, includes a metal cage surrounding the building. When lightning strikes this metal cafe, instead of transmitting the energy to the grounding system, it follows the cafe and does not damage the building.

Tailed Lightning Lightning Arrester: Tailed lightning lightning arresters are mainly used in power transmission lines. These lightning rods collect the energy of the lightning and then transmit the energy to the ground.

The principle of operation of lightning rods is usually based on collecting the energy of lightning, directing it and grounding it under control. Thus, it becomes possible to prevent or minimize fire, electrical malfunctions and other damages caused by lightning.
