"Shale" (or "shale rock") refers to rock formations from which hydrocarbons like oil and natural gas are extracted. These rocks typically consist of specialized types of rocks such as compacted sandstone or shale. "Shale energy," on the other hand, refers to the extraction of hydrocarbons from such rocks for energy production.
Shale energy emerges as an important energy source when accessing hydrocarbon reserves through conventional means becomes difficult or uneconomical. Shale energy involves technologies like hydraulic fracturing (fracking) to extract hydrocarbons. In this process, high-pressure water, sand, and chemicals are used to fracture the rocks and release the trapped hydrocarbons.
Shale energy can be used to meet various energy needs. Hydrocarbons like natural gas and oil can be utilized for purposes such as heating, electricity generation, industrial processes, and transportation.
